I meant rofling about the thread in general 02:01:48 go unity! 02:01:53 Welcome to the 20 March 2016 Ubuntu California meeting! 02:02:05 This meeting is agendaless, and will therefore be very short. 02:02:18 #topic Upcoming events 02:02:29 Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is scheduled for release on Thursday, 21 April 2016. 02:02:56 I hope we'll have a couple of release parties for that. Does anyone have any announcements? 02:03:11 * ianorlin unfortanetly does not 02:03:49 nchambers: anything going on in the Bay Area? 02:04:41 i'd think the release would itself be an agenda 02:04:59 DonkeyHotei: why? 02:05:45 releases are integral to loco activity in general, especially lts 02:06:01 nhaines, I've been thinking about trying to start a LUG, but other than that nothing majro 02:06:56 Is ubuntu phone available for general release yet? 02:07:10 nchambers: yes, for about 12 months now! 02:07:20 Okay, so no release party announcements. 02:07:32 Let's discuss this on the mailing list. There's still time to organize gettogethers. 02:07:37 Does someone want to mail the list? 02:07:44 Get the conversation started. :) 02:08:06 I would, but I'm not on it yet 02:08:42 nchambers: it's very easy! You can subscribe at https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-us-ca 02:08:42 Title: [Ubuntu-us-ca Info Page] 02:08:46 It's pretty low traffic. 02:08:50 thanks! 02:09:11 #topic Announcements 02:09:23 Well, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is coming out soon... :) 02:10:05 In phone news, Ubuntu OTA-10 should be out in the next one or two weeks, and there have been some pretty major convergence groundwork laid. 02:10:44 I'm excited for both. I might buy a cheap android to play around with the new os, and I'm interested to see Elementary with the new Ubuntu 02:11:14 I suspect OTA-11 or OTA-12 will have desktop app support included. There's still some work to do but it's definitely working so far; just not landed in the main images. 02:11:32 desktop app support? 02:11:35 But desktop mode is quite usable. Not perfect by any means, but more functional than annoying. 02:12:04 Right now, an Ubuntu phone or tablet can only run Ubuntu SDK apps. But they've been working (for over a year) on building support in for any Ubuntu app. 02:12:51 So for example, you can flash a dev image, put the system into read/write mode, install a couple PPAs and packages, and install LibreOffice or Firefox. 02:13:00 ! 02:13:02 thats really nice 02:13:04 Or GIMP or... well, any ARM-compatible app. 02:13:18 that would certainly make app development, different 02:13:53 Meanwhile, the Ubuntu "core apps" are really nice in desktop mode. The music app and the email app are very nice in particular. 02:14:22 whats performance like? 02:14:55 So that work continues apace. After Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (probably a couple of months later), we'll start to see Ubuntu Personal images that are built on snappy Ubuntu Core that can run any Ubuntu app, mobile or desktop. And the phone will be rebased to Snappy too. 02:15:14 Performance is device-dependent. The phones and tablets aren't exactly powerhouses, but they get things done. 02:15:37 There's a 2% performance hit for running an X app under Mir. 02:15:59 I spoke to nhandler about doing a release party at yelp, so we'll likely do that in SF if I can find the time to put things together 02:16:20 So a Nexus 7 2013 model is probably a good investment in a month or two. Or buy now and beat the rush! 02:16:25 pleia2: that's good news! 02:16:32 nhaines: yeah :) 02:17:13 That's all I have for announcements.... Ubuntu on devices is on the brink of something awesome, and Snappy Ubnutu Core is going to be really amazing for 16.04. 02:18:02 oh, also canceling the ubuntu hour in SF in April in lieu of the release party (no overlap, but I can't do both) 02:18:31 Also updated packages like every release :) 02:19:14 LibreOffice 5.1 is nice. :) 02:19:24 #topic Other business 02:19:33 Okay, that wraps it up for this meeting. Any parting comments before we go? 02:22:39 * ianorlin does not have anything 02:22:44 Alright, the next meeting is April 3rd. Hope everyone has a nice Sunday and I'll see everyone in two weeks! 02:22:47 #endmeeting Generated by MeetBot 0.1.5 (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/meetingology)
